Blue Jays Spring Training Recap – March 14, 2012

The Jays are now unbeaten in 9 MLB spring training games with a 7-5 victory over the New York Yankees, read the full recap here.

Edwin Encarnacion hit a pair of home runs and J.P. Arencibia added one of his own as the Blue Jays extended their Grapefruit League unbeaten streak to nine games with a 7-5 victory over the Yankees on Wednesday afternoon at Florida Auto Exchange Stadium.

Encarnacion, who made his first start of the spring in left field, opened the scoring in the bottom of the second with a solo shot off Yankees right-hander Freddy Garcia. Encarnacion’s first homer came on a 1-1 pitch and easily cleared the wall in left.

“When he stays through the baseball, his power is as good as anybody we have, and it was obviously the case today,” Blue Jays manager John Farrell said.

Right-hander Henderson Alvarez got the start for the Blue Jays and allowed one run on four hits while striking out three. His lone blemish occurred in the third inning on a Curtis Granderson RBI double to the right-center-field gap.

Blue Jays up next: Right-hander Dustin McGowan will make his second start of the Grapefruit League season when the Blue Jays travel to Kissimmee, Fla., to take on the Astros on Thursday at 1:05 p.m. ET. McGowan will be followed on the mound by Kyle Drabek, Jesse Chavez and Jerry Gil. Thursday also will mark the return of Travis Snider and Eric Thames to the lineup as they continue their competition for the starting job in left field. Both players received the day off on Wednesday, and while it’s not immediately clear who will start against Houston, manager John Farrell said both would get into the game.
