Blue Jays Series Recap – Could Have Been Worse, Jays Take One Of Three From Red Sox

Exactly how the title reads this three game set versus the Boston Red Sox could have easily been worse and the Toronto Blue Jays escaped with a win on Sunday to take one of three.  Drew Hutchison gave the Jays a strong seven innings and suddenly looks like the most steady option in the rotation after looking overmatched in a few earlier starts.

The game today was a chippy affair with a few beanballs and some near chin music.  Daniel Bard was extremely wild and that touched off a near brawl after both Yunel Escobar and Edwin Encarnacion were struck in the hand with pitches.  Drew Hutchison responded by hitting Red Sox catcher Kelly Shoppach and third basemen Kevin Youkilis.

Youk wasn’t happy with the high and tight pitch that nearly hit his head and motioned to the mound to “keep it down” if the intent was to hit him.

CURRENT RECORD: 28-26, 4th place, 3 games behind 1st place.

Quick recaps and boxscores:

Game 1 – Red Sox 7, Blue Jays 2 – Clay Buchholz (6.58 / 1.73) continues dominance over Blue Jays, somehow winning his sixth straight start in Toronto.

Game 2 – Red Sox 7, Blue Jays 4 – Felix Doubrant pitches Sox to victory, Punto near cycle.

Game 3 – Blue Jays 5, Red Sox 1 – Hutch 7 ip, 5 h, 1 er, 1 bb – 5 K (4.35 / 1.35)

UP NEXT: Big three game series versus the Chicago White Sox (31-23).

I found the series to be mildly disappointing, but only mildly. Nick Punto isn’t Ty Cobb, but he sure looked like him on the weekend. This kind of player always seems to give the Jays fits. Anyways, I’ll take a 4-2 homestand against AL East opponents anytime.
