Blue Jays Prospect Report – August 9, 2012

Hitters:

MAJ (1B) David Cooper, 1-4, 1 RBI, .280, HR (4)
AA (CF) Jake Marisnick, 1-5, 1 RBI, .202; scuffling in Double-A
LoA (CF) Michael Crouse, 1-4, .211, BB (11)
R (RF) Jake Anderson, 1-5, .208,
R (2B) Christian Lopes, 2-5, .257
R (CF) Dwight Smith, 1-4, .228, BB (1)

A quick AL east prospect note, Baltimore Orioles (and possibly baseball) best prospect SP Dylan Bundy has been promoted to Double-A following his start last night. Incredible given his age and lack of pro experience.

After another 2-hit night in the 10-4 loss to the NYY in the series opener, I wonder what the future holds for David Cooper.

He can hit, but his offense isn’t good enough for a corner infield position. He has virtually no speed, which rules him out for an OF position. The Jays are well-heeled at DH. He defends okay, but he’s no Casey Kotchman (which isn’t saying much). And he seems better than a AAAA player.

What value does he have? He might be very productive, relatively speaking, in a good hitter’s environment. Would the Cubs be interested? He’s better (and younger) than LaHair. Is he better than Greg Rohan?

I’d have to agree. The Jays have to be clearly looking into next season plans already. With the injuries what they are, this season has been done for a month.

David Cooper could have decent value if a team is fooled by his inflated Triple-A numbers and decent showing so far in the bigs. Maybe AA could really do a good sell job and get a decent piece or pitcher.
