Ricky Romero Undergoes Surgery, Brian Butterfield Joins Red Sox

A few odds and ends today:

-Toronto Blue Jays left-hander Ricky Romero was expected to need six weeks of recovery time after undergoing arthroscopic left elbow surgery.

The routine procedure was performed by Dr. Lewis Yocum after the regular season ended to clean up the left elbow area, the team said Tuesday in a release. Romero also received PRP (platelet-rich plasma) treatments to both knees to enhance the recovery of his quadriceps tendinitis.

The 27-year-old southpaw struggled last season. He finished with a 9-14 record and 5.77 earned-run average.

Romero left his last start of the season on Sept. 30 after only three innings due to a left leg injury.

His off-season throwing program and readiness for spring training were not expected to be affected by the procedures, the team said.

QUICK TAKE: Could this be a reason for Romero’s disastrous 2012 campaign?  This news might actually be a relief for Jays fans if Romero’s struggles were directly related.

-Brian Butterfield will be joining John Farrell in Boston as it was announced today he will be taking the same job for the Red Sox.

QUICK TAKE: To which I tweeted earlier, “Oh no, you mean the #BlueJays will be losing the guy who windmills his arm at third base?  That’ll be tough to replace”.

In all seriousness, I assume the incoming manager (whomever that may be) will want to pick a good majority of his coaching staff anyway.

Interesting times. The Jays need so much. I don’t know if I’m optimistic or not. My attitude is “wait and see” anymore.
