Alex Anthopoulos & The Art of War

Patience is a virtue – has that saying ever been more relevant than right now for the Toronto Blue Jays fan base?

Last year at this time when almost every random Blue Jays fan was bitching, moaning and all but throwing the entire organization under a bus for not signing the fat Prince Fielder for $200MM we had a different take here at AL Eastbound.

Basically it was relax, Alex Anthopoulos has got this.  Thanks.

Why on earth would a team (even without hindsight of the past disastrous season) was clearly not built to win in 2012 break the bank and their benches for a bad-bodied DH who wouldn’t guarantee them anything but an increased Twinkie budget?

Stick to the plan, don’t deviate and certainly don’t give in to the fickle mob.

“Appear weak when you are strong, and strong when you are weak.” –Sun Tzu, The Art of War.

Alex Anthopoulos knew the Blue Jays would never be a winner without building a base of minor league depth that could feed the major league roster for the next half decade.  During his first season it was clear that they would be beefing up the scouting and player development departments with a focus on high end athletes in the draft.

“All warfare is based on deception.” –Sun Tzu, The Art of War.

The Blue Jays, much to the surprise of the common fan were in fact spending a lot of money.  They were just doing it in the smart way when considering exactly where they were on the ‘ready to compete’ chart.

The outspent almost every team in major league baseball over the past five years and went from having one of the worst farm systems in baseball to having one that is absolutely loaded.  Oh, the best thing is it is still absolutely loaded even after dealing Jake Marisnick and Justin Nicolino.

“Victorious warriors win first and then go to war, while defeated warriors go to war first and then seek to win” –Sun Tzu, The Art of War.

Had he [Anthopoulos] been rash or given in to the pressures of the impatient fans he would’ve (a) handcuffed the franchise greatly and (b) not made this blockbuster deal with the Marlins at all possible.  Putting the carriage in front of the horse is never a prudent strategy.

All good things come to those who wait.  Alex Anthopoulos has decided that the timing was right to go all-in.

It was announced today that the Blue Jays just signed Melky Cabrera to a very tidy two-year deal worth $16MM.  When was the last time a top tier free agent (ranked #16 on the MLB trade rumours available free agent list) was ever attracted to the Blue Jays?

Players are taking notice that the Blue Jays are a team on the rise.  They have a deep farm system, an astute front office and an owner who has held their end of the bargain.  Alex Anthopoulos said that if and when the timing was right the money would be there, fans scoffed.

One decent offseason does not constitute a dynasty and there is still plenty of work to do.  There of course will be unforeseen issues but if we can take anything away from what has been a whirlwind few days for Blue Jays nation it is this:

Relax, Alex Anthopoulos and the front office has got this.

What is next?  Can the Jays attract a Zack Greinke or Anibal Sanchez?  Will another top free agent sign a short term deal with a young team clearly on the rise?

@tberry3 – The Jays are getting 1 year of J.Johnson, 3 of Buerhle and 5 of Jose Reyes for like $60MM less than it cost for 8 years of Fielder.  I like this.

Schöner Post. Ähnlich toll, wie Gaming auch. So

MlbTR is reporting its a two year 16 mil contract and u have said since the beginning of free agency that milky would be a great value sign for Toronto it made to much sense. He needs to rebuild value and the jays needed a left fielder. Lets hope he can play without the juice.
